-stand frontage. Before we go any further, let’s take a quick look at the technical specs… Each panel has 108 tri-colour (RGB) SMD LEDs onboard and has a viewing angle of 180 degrees. It has its own built-in auto programs and sound active function, which allows for easy standalone operation and Master/Slave synchronisation of multiple panels. There are also selectable DMX options ranging from 9 to 98 channels, allowing for individual pixel control of the unit’s 27 separate sections.

If joined with lots of other units, it can be pixel-mapped to create endless impressive designs… but enough about that, what does it look like in action? I recently took out my brand new pair to a gig and positioned them on two uprights from my booth. For the early evening, I set them to a slow multicolour fade (Master/Slave) via the onboard menu (no DMX controller used). I have to say, the light output was nothing short of stunning!

While I was expecting a visual effect similar to the light screens of yesteryear, they actually kick out a fair amount of light. With the whole ‘cube’ lit up, it washed the floor and we were able to dim the house lights much earlier than planned 82 as I was providing enough light for everyone! And they look superb too. Quite mesmerising.

I was tempted to swivel them around to face me! When the music picked up, I switched on my other effects (a pair of rollers) and changed the Rubix to sound-to-light mode. If I’m honest, they were a bit quick – even on the lowest sound setting – but the patterns were very good and varied. In this mode, you almost forget their retro look and start to see them as really cool visual effects for your audience.

Regardless of the obvious ‘80s connection, they are my new favourite lights! And, as described in the User Manual, they really are ‘eye candy’. Highly recommended. LEDJ RUBIX RGB 3D PANEL
