’s SPOTWASH-3048 in the last edition of Pro Mobile, for this issue I had the chance to try out a pair of the company’s MINIZOOM-powered moving head beam / wash fixtures with motorized zoom. 8800 Having been a part of the sound and lighting scene for many years – parent company Monacor recently celebrated its fiftieth birthday – IMG Stageline underwent a re-brand earlier this year and since then has released a slew of innovative new products targeted squarely at mobile DJs.

The aforementioned SPOTWASH-3048 is a moving head that offers a clever combination of both spot and wash effects, meaning that DJs can achieve the same looks with four heads that would previously have required eight. Similarly, the MINIZOOM-712 - that this review will focus on - also offers two effects in one, this time wide-angle washes and tightlyfocused beam effects. This is possible thanks to its motorised zoom function, a feature only previously found on much more expensive fixtures.

The MINIZOOM-712 is powered by seven RGBW LEDs, each rated at 12W. The combined output is really quite impressive, meaning that the fixture is able to make an impact even when competing with lots of ambient light. The LEDs are mounted to a moving plate which slides forwards and backwards within the fixture’s casing to produce its motorised zoom function. This allows the beam angle to be altered remotely from a tight 6-degree beam to a wide 36-degree wash.

Having read these specifications on paper, I wasn’t really sure how much of a difference this change in beam angle would actually make in practice, but I have to say that I was very impressed. In fact, I was amazed by the huge difference to the shape of the beam that is caused by moving the LEDs backwards and forwards by only an inch! At its narrowest setting, the MINIZOOM-712 generates a very tight circle of light. Its edges aren’t as sharply focused as you would expect from a moving head spot fixture but, considering there is no lens to provide focus, the circle is remarkably well defined.

This setting is ideal for creating the kind of chunky mid-air beam effects that are popular in clubs and on concert tours, especially if you’re lucky enough to be working in a venue that allows haze. At the opposite end of the spectrum, set to its widest beam angle, the MINIZOOM-712 produces a broad wash of light with nice soft edges. This is ideal for washing large areas of a venue with vibrant colours or even bright white light. Obviously, any angle between the upper and lower limits can also be selected, and I found that at around the halfway you can achieve a good-sized spotlight perfect for highlighting the bride and groom for IMG STTHAGE EALRINT EO MF IANDIZVOEROTMIS-7IN1G2 their first dance at a wedding.
