’d been using the same set for about five years when, a few weeks ago, the left-hand side of my headphones died. It was obviously time for a new pair, and I was just about to get the same cheap 30 quid set that I’d used before when a thought occurred to me... I’ve always loved the Beyerdynamic DT150 headphones, why not use those for DJing? 7788 For anyone unfamiliar, the Beyer DT150s are what you usually find in radio studios.

They are seriously well-made bits of kit and the earphone pads and jack plug cable that goes into the actual headphones are designed to be replaced and repaired as Beyer know they have a tough life. I looked on Amazon and found a brand new pair for about £120, so hit the ‘Buy It Now’ button without even thinking twice. I first tried my new Beyers at home prepping a mix for the radio show I do. I’m quite used to wearing them on radio, but using them when working in my home studio made me feel much more business-like, confident and professional.

Obviously, they have an excellent sound quality too with a very wide frequency response of 5 – 30,000 Hz. What I wasn’t quite prepared for was the difference they would make to me working out at gigs. I don’t know about you, but when the volume is turned up later in the evening I’ve often found locating an exact cue point, or achieving the perfect mix, to be a little tricky. No such problem with the Beyers on, as their excellent closed-headphone design fits comfortably over your ear (or ears) cutting out a lot of unwanted noise.

I even found myself using the Beyers to actually listen to the tracks I was playing on occasions, because they sound so darn good! Another wonderful thing about the closed headphone design is that they are perfect for ending conversations with really annoying punters... Large closed headphones put over ears and head down over decks and people know you can’t hear them and there is no point continuing the conversation! You can also try and pretend you can’t hear your spouse saying “THEY COST HOW MUCH!?!?!”...

Good luck with that one though... I find the headphones are extremely comfortable and the headband can be adjusted to fit your head whatever size it is. Even my 12 year old trainee DJ can use them. They might take a little bit of getting used to, as they are heavier than most other headphones.

I don’t see this as a big problem though, as when you’re DJing they aren’t on your head all the time. So, as you can probably tell, I absolutely love the DT150s, but don’t just take my word for it. I checked out many online reviews for the headphones and couldn’t find any serious negative.
